About Mission Aashalok
Aashalok - the land of hope, giving the residents all the basic amenities to make them feel at home. This initiative helps address the critical issue of destitute individuals with mental health challenges, a population often marginalized and overlooked. The project uses an operational approach which includes, Rescue, Medication, Counselling, Life skill training, Family Reunification and Sustainability. The centre not only aims to provide immediate care but also strives to reconnect residents with their families or loved ones whenever possible. Reuniting these individuals with their support networks can significantly enhance their chances of successful reintegration into society.

Premjit's Story
Premjit Chotelalage (name changed), about 41 years old, was rescued by Nuapada police from Larka Nuapada on September 17, 2022, and admitted to Mission Aashalok in Jharsuguda for care. When he arrived, he was in poor condition, with unkempt hair, nails, and hygiene. After being cleaned and fed, a psychiatrist diagnosed him with a mental disorder and prescribed treatment. Initially withdrawn and isolated, Premjit underwent regular therapy, counselling, and health checkups. Over time, his physical and mental health improved. He engaged in activities like yoga, exercise, gardening, pottery, and cleaning, which helped restore his social behaviour and life skills. When stable, Premjit shared his home address in Chicholi, Maharashtra. With the help of Khaparkheda police and volunteers, his family was located. However, they couldn't come to get him, so a staff member accompanied him home. On March 21, 2024, Premjit was joyfully reunited with his uncle and family, bringing closure to his journey of recovery and reunion.
