Alcohol and drug abuse has emerged as a serious concern in India. As per the report of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi during 2018, the report of the survey was released in February, 2019, Alcohol is the most common psychoactive substance used by Indians followed by Cannabis and Opioids. About 16 Crore persons consume alcohol in the country, 3.1 Crore individuals use cannabis products and 2.26 Crore use opioids. More than 5.7 Crore individuals are affected by harmful or dependent alcohol use and need help for their alcohol use problems, about 25 lakh suffer from cannabis dependence and approximately 77 lakh individuals are estimated to need help for their opioid use problems. Substance use disorders are serious problem adversely affecting the social fabric of the country. Dependence to any substance not only affects the individual’s health but also disrupts their families and the whole society. Regular consumption of various psychoactive substances leads to dependence of the individual. To annihilate the practice of drug addiction and extending a helping hand to those who are looking for a way out of it, Peoples Forum started a program named District De-Addiction centre with the support of Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India. The centre was inaugurated on 11 th August 2023. The centre was started with 15 bed facility, with maintain of proper hygiene and infrastructure. The main focus of DDAC is early prevention, education, demand reduction, identification, treatment and rehabilitation services of vulnerable individual or individual affected by substance use disorders. The functioning of DDAC is formed under Nasha Mukti Bharat Abhiyan (NMBA). It have been started on 461 different district pan India, among them there are two district Odisha, Balangir is one of them.
The objectives of the Program for Prevention of Alcoholism and Substance (Drug) Abuse are:
We provide 30 days residential treatment services to the patients for detoxification and psychological therapy without paying any cost of beneficiaries. Patients could stay here for a maximum period of another month in deserving cases. The period of stay, in no circumstances, should exceed two months.
We conduct various awareness generation programmes on de-addiction in school, collage as well as community with the help of resources and stake holders for mass awareness and education.
